Why Does My Dog Eat Grass?

Many dog owners encounter their pup noshing on grass from time to time. There are a few reasons as to why they may be doing this. Many believe perhaps their dog is experiencing tummy troubles however there really is not any concrete evidence linking this to one specific reason. While vets can’t be 100% sure as to why your dog is drawn to grubbing on grass, they have a few ideas as to what may be causing this behavior.

Bored Now…..If Fido is trapped in the back yard with nothing to keep them busy then he will find something to pass the time. Many people think that simply because Fido has a big yard he will be a happy dog. Not true! Your dog needs activity. If he has nothing to do then eating grass (or worse) will keep him busy. Just like some dig holes, well some will eat grass. If this is happening to your pup take longer walks with them. Give him toys. Tire those puppies out.

It’s So Tasty Too….Yes. Some dogs just like the taste. The texture and flavor of grass can draw your dog to nosh away. There may be some nutritional value your dog is craving. A touch of fiber perhaps?

Tummy Troubles….and yes the most widely believed reason is their tummy is upset. Again, this is not as common of a reason as most believe but it is still a valid reason. You can tell if your dog is eating grass because of an upset stomach when you notice them rushing outside to swallow mouthfuls of grass. Then only to follow up with some vomiting. If this is happening with your pup monitor what they are eating just before this activity takes place. Perhaps they are eating something they shouldn’t be.

Overall grass eating won’t cause any problems just ensure you’re not using pesticides or fertilizers on the grass as they can be toxic.
