Go Crazy with Your Treats, Part 3

Okay, this is the last of my series on going crazy with your treats in anticipation of Valentine’s Day. Today’s recipes really impressed me. The first is fromblisstree.com, and it’s instruction for making Valentine’s Day Dog Biscuits

Valentine’s Day Dog Biscuits

1 1/4 cups shredded Cheddar cheese
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1/4 cup beef broth
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1/2 cup cornmeal
1/4 cup powdered milk

~ Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Grease cookie sheets.

~ In a large bowl, stir together the cheese, oil, beef broth and garlic.

~ Combine the whole wheat flour, all purpose flour, cornmeal and powdered milk; stir into the cheese mixture until well blended. You may need to use your hand to properly blend the dough.

~ On a lightly floured surface, roll the dough out to 1/4 inch thickness. Use a heart shaped cookie cutter to cut out the treats. Place them onto the prepared baking sheet 1 1/2 inches apart.

~ Bake for 20 to 25 minutes in the preheated oven, until the treats are firm and the bottoms are lightly browned. Cool on wire racks.

What I like about this one is that it goes beyond the usual list of four ingredients (whole-wheat flour, applesauce, molasses, and oil) with some ingredients that I might actually have (i.e., not powdered kelp or beet juice). The recipe makes sense, and it’s quick. I give it five paws and suggest you try it. Heck, you might even try a few treats yourself. The next one also impressed me, and it comes fromallrecipes.com. It’s a recipe for Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits.

Peanut Butter and Banana Dog Biscuits

Ingredients

·         1 egg

·         1/3 cup peanut butter

·         1/2 cup mashed banana

·         1 tablespoon honey

·         1 cup whole wheat flour

·         1/2 cup wheat germ

·         1 egg white, lightly beaten, for brushing

Directions

1.       Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.

2.       Stir together the egg, peanut butter, banana, and honey in a medium bowl; blend thoroughly. Stir in the flour and wheat germ; mix well. Turn dough out onto a floured board and roll to 1/4 inch thick. Cut into desired shapes with a cookie cutter, place on prepared baking sheet, and brush tops with egg white.

3.       Bake biscuits in preheated oven until dried and golden brown, about 30 minutes, depending on size. Remove from oven and cool on a wire rack.

Like the last recipe, this one can be done in under an hour. It uses straightforward but original ingredients, and, I have to tell you, it looks fantastic. I want to eat one right now, but I’ll save it for the dogs. If I decide to gild the lily, I’ll melt some carob and drizzle it over the treats. Why not? It’s Valentine’s Day, and I just may go crazy with the treats!
