Halloween

By now you know that chocolate is bad for your pet, right? You know about theobromine, theophylline, and caffeine and how bad they are for your pet. Halloween is a tough time for pets, especially dogs. They love chocolate. They really do. And they’re ingenious in finding ways to get to it. I have a friend whose terrier worked through two sets of zippers, a plastic enclosure, and foil wrappers to get to a heapin’ helpin’ of chocolate Riesen. As a terrier, Sadie was a small dog, and small dogs are more easily poisoned than larger dogs. Sadie got sick, showing all the signs of chocolate poisoning – vomiting, diarrhea, and excessive thirst. My friend took her to the vet, and Sadie was saved. The fact that the chocolate was milk chocolate and not dark chocolate or cocoa helped. Sadie, though, ate a whole bag of chocolate candy. Her real problem was the fat in the Riesen. She developed pancreatitis, and she suffered from it for the rest of her life. This Halloween, be sure to keep chocolate candy up off the floor, even if it’s in backpacks or other containers. You wouldn’t believe how motivated and clever your dog can be when chocolate candy is at stake. Caramel is terrible for them, too. And raisins, while great, healthy alternatives for your children, are horrible for dogs. Halloween is a great holiday, maybe the best of the year, so make sure that your dog is protected – now and for the rest of the holidays.
