How Healthy Is Healthy?

I’m astonished by all the products and services marketed for the health of pets. If something is available for people, then it’s certainly available for your pet because… what? Pets are like people? No. Because people buy stuff for their pets! There is an enormous market for pet vitamins (and fortunately sites for treating vitamin overdose for pets) and for dietary supplements (“to give your dog a nutritional boost”!). There are even gift baskets that you can give for special nutritional benefit! How in the world did we get here? And how did dogs ever survive before their diets become “scientific” (check out Hill’s Science Diet for “prescription” diet products!)? It depends on whom you ask, of course, but the majority of authorities appear to credit longer life to a combination of factors that have little, if anything, to do with special diets. Rather, making a good choice of breed, since some breeds, especially smaller dogs live longer, keeping meals small and not overfeeding, and exercising the dog all contribute to longevity. So, what’s the lesson in all this? It’s not the sophistication of the diet but the habits – exercise, portioning, and care – that help your dog live a long, healthy life.
