Say “No” to the Easter Bunny!

I say, “Down with the Easter bunny!” Not, of course, “Down with the Easter Bunny” because that would be wrong. Who doesn’t love the notion of the Easter Bunny hopping down the trail and leaving baskets of chocolatey goodness on Easter morning? I love that guy! I’m just not as enamored of the Easter bunny. Notice the small-b in bunny, right? Some people think that giving a bunny on Easter is as cool a gift as a basket of chocolatey goodness, but it’s not. I was reading today at one of my favorite blogs, the Laughing Pet, an article about impulse bunny-buying, and I learned a lot of helpful points. First, rabbits live a long time. If you are good to them, they’ll live as long as ten years! Now, the trick is to be good to them, and that’s where people don’t think ahead. Rabbits require plenty of good care, including fresh water, timothy hay, greens, and occasionally – but only occasionally – pellets and carrots. They also need constant temperature and very good protection from potential predators. Consequently, you should think about an indoor cage that accommodates their size. And did you know that rabbits can be aggressive? They can be, and I’m not just talking about the fearsome killer bunny of Caerbannog:

To calm down their aggressive behavior, you’ll need to neuter the rabbit. On the good side, rabbits are not hard to litter-train. On the bad side, you’ll have more litter to change out. Most people giving away rabbits don’t think much about that part. That’s why so many rabbits are abandoned at shelters or released to the wild (and a swift death). So, as the Laughing Pet says, if it’s not an impulse purchase and if the recipient is really set on a bunny, “consider a shelter or rabbit rescue. There are several shelters across southern New Jersey and Pennsylvania that have rabbits available for adoption (being that rabbits are the third most commonly found animals in shelters), many of which are already spayed or neutered, and are waiting to meet their new owners.” So, say yes to this guy:
