October Is Pitbull Awareness Month

Dogs Pit BullThe Pitbull has been a familiar breed for centuries. Loved, considered gentle and loyal. However, over the years perception of this breed has changed.  It has changed to the point of states banning ownership of these dogs. Why? What on earth has happened?

October is Pitbull Awareness Month. In an effort to educate, as well as advocate, this month of awareness kicked off in 2011. It all began with a loving pittie pet owner who lost her pet and decided to bring awareness to the world on the gentle and loving side of this breed. Her goal was set in motion a worldwide change in the perspectives of the breed.

Around the early 80’s this breed began to be incorporated into the drug world as well as the dog fighting arena. Not by their choice or doing, of course. Due to their fierce appearance as well as their strength, these illegal rings found the Pits quite suitable for their illegal activities. This put a dark cloud over the breed.

However, we need to focus our efforts and attentions on getting that cloud lifted. This breed is not evil. In the wrong hands, anything can be used in a negative way. Pits are no different.

What Cesar Millan says about Pit Bulls:

Here are some ways you can help lift the cloud and help bring awareness:

– Promote responsible ownership. Education is key. The right person is required for each breed.  It’s not a one-size fits all breed.  Prospective owners should make sure they can invest the proper time and love into this breed.  It’s imperative!

– Talk to your kids about the breed. There is a wonderful book called “Max, the Shelter Dog” by Nicole Rivera. Our children are the voices of the future.  Let’s start there!

– Share posts and stories about your pittie. If you have social media, write blogs or enter a photo contest share your Pitbull with the world. Social media is a powerful tool and should be used to spread accurate information.

-If you don’t own a Pitbull, educate yourself on the breed.  You can easily make a difference by doing some research and reading and sharing your new found knowledge with your family, friends, and the world! Pit Bull Awareness Day begins with you. Are you ready?
